Pool safety can be tricky but you don’t have to tackle it alone. To kickstart our list of pool fencing tips here is a video from a legal advisor on how to protect the safety of your family and friends.

Pool Fencing Tips to Avoid Headaches, Hassles, and Fines

Lessons learned are invaluable, particularly when others have already paid for the lesson. Below is a curated list of customer complaints that have been filed against different fencing companies and the insights we can extract from them.

  • Comply with bylaws: ensuring you meet municipal regulations for pool fence height, gate design, and qualitative requirements like ensuring the fence can’t be easily scaled with an adjacent prop increases the safety of your pool as well as helping you avoid additional costs or time for rework. For a full list of bylaws, see here.
  • Minimum Height: ensure your fence has the right height to keep children from falling in, refer to specific bylaws for your city.
  • Maximum enclosure gaps: to prevent objects from entering and striking anyone in the pool, some cities like Waterloo have restrictions on how wide an enclosure can open (i.e. exclusive of the gate).

  • Materials: there are different rules around opening diameters for pool fences that change depending on which materials you are using.  For example, see Waterloo bylaws. The most common type of material is chain link or wood fences.
  • Submit fence design:  in some cities like Cambridge you are required to share a plot plan of your pool indicating where it is located along with a diagram of the pool fence/enclosure that is planned.
  • Well designed gate: make sure that your gate meets your city bylaw requirements including relative safety measures like locking mechanisms to keep children from accessing the pool on their own.
  • Get home insurance: in the event that guests are injured at the pool at your home, getting your home insured can help you cover the costs of litigation. Costs can quickly escalate for injuries relating to spinal cord or brain damage.

Pool Fencing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Do kiddy pools require fencing? As a rule of thumb pools that can completely submerge a child should have fencing for the safety of your family. In Waterloo, a pool that can hold at least 2 feet of water is considered a pool.
  • What does “easily scalable” mean? Bylaw enforcement will look at how easy it is to scale your backyard or pool fence. For example, if a child only needs to use a small step stool to get over your pool fence, chances are if an inspection occurs you will be required to increase the height of your fence.
  • How long do pool fences usually last? Fences can last anywhere from 5-10 years according to one professional fencing company. However, depending on factors like the climate of Ontario and the workmanship of the fence, this lifespan is certain to decline.
  • Should I install my own pool fence or get someone to do it? We recommend going with a qualified service provider who can provide you with the best pool fencing craftsmanship that will last the test of time and elements. Pool fencing may be a simpler matter in moderate climates, but in Ontario, by choosing the right materials, joints, and design you can extend your pool fence by as much as 2-5 years.
  • How long does it take to install a pool fencing? Pool fences typically take less than a week to install with labour occurring during the day for optimal visibility. Specific situations may change this timeline.

Acoustic Fencing – How To Reduce Road Or Neighbor Noise

Putting up a wall between you and a noisy neighbour or a busy road will not be effective unless you know the various options for acoustic fencing and the science behind them. Jay Fencing has experience working with an extensive portfolio of acoustic fence designs and installations using outdoor fences. Click here to find out how we can help you install or design your best bet against noise distractions for your home and business. This article highlights how noise enters a home, strategies for noise reduction, and finally 3 steps to creating an acoustic fence that ensures your fence is hardened against physical and acoustic intrusions.

sound barrier fence opening logoHow Noise Finds Its Way Into Your Home

Sound originates from a source (i.e. home stereo, siren, or a neighbour who is having a bad day) causing the air around it to vibrate. The sound travels like a wave through the air, traversing any solid material between you and the source, and finally enters the ear causing the eardrums to vibrate producing the sound we hear, pleasant or otherwise. Sound waves are difficult to halt with materials like glass, wood, or cement, making certain that you will typically hear noises from the road or neighbours. Assuming that you’ve explored options to stop the sound at the source, it is recommended that you use the following strategies to abate the sound.

Sound Absorption VS. Sound Redirection

Knowing these approaches can help you create a layered defense against unwanted noise. There is more than one way to reduce the noise entering your home, including both sound absorption and redirection.

Sound absorption
– dampens the sound by absorbing the energy waves with a material that reduces the noise. Noise cancelling headphones or ear plugs are a great example of this approach. The limitation to this approach is that it is only as effective as the material and the surface area it covers. Below we will detail how this approach is utilized without sticking something in your ear, though sometimes that is the simpler solution. Sound absorption is, in general, one aspect of sound dampening or abatement that can be coupled with multiple layers of sound reduction mechanisms.

Sound Redirection
– creating a solid and tightly enclosed fence can help reflect and redirect the sound back towards the source rather than allowing it to continue to move along into your home. Sound redirection is another approach to reducing the amount of sound entering a home. It is true that some products like Jakoustic acoustic barriers utilize absorption and redirection against unwanted sound.

Designing Your Best Bet Against Unwanted Noise

Here are the top 4 ways to guard your family and workplace against intrusions in acoustic privacy, ranging from the design of your fence to choosing the right materials to stop noise from seeping through.

1 - Opt for Tight Fencing Arrangements
1 - Opt for Tight Fencing Arrangements
A tight arrangement of materials such as oak or cement blocks can increase the degree of sound deflection within an acoustic fence. Ensuring that the fence is seamless is typically a challenge for most fences as the posts can create gaps within the sound barrier, but by using specially designed interlocking materials, it is possible. Jakoustic timber is a great example of this type of product.
2 - Get Materials that Absorb Sound
2 - Get Materials that Absorb Sound
Materials that absorb incoming sound waves before they reach your home can significantly reduce the amount of disturbances you experience. The absorptive material will swallow up a majority of the incoming noise waves by making the trip from the source to your home more difficult to traverse. Materials have been developed specifically for this purpose, including Jakoustic sound absorber and Acoustiguard’s barrier absorber.
3 - Ensure your Fence has the Right Height
3 - Ensure your Fence has the Right Height
One of the main reasons that noise travels into your home is that its source is elevated above the height of your wall. Knowing the source of the noise coming into your home can help you build the right wall that stands above the noise keeping your family free from distractions. In general, the acoustic fence should stand at least a meter above the source of the noise.
4 - Try and not fall for these Common Gotchas
4 - Try and not fall for these Common Gotchas
Careful analysis of the sounds that one is attempting to avoid when erecting a sound barrier is crucial to landing on the right design. Avoid these critical mistakes when designing your home's acoustic fence and defend against unwanted noise from around the neighbourhood or marketplace. See here for an article on sound barrier fencing.

DIYers & Professionals Reviews On Azek Decks

Here are some excerpts and conclusions we can draw from what DIY enthusiasts and professionals have been saying about Azek decks materials.

  • Specialized Tools Required for Fastener Concealment –  Azek decks require HIDFast system to help create a polished and unblemished look, concealing the presence of fasteners on the deck surface.
  • Need to Closely Follow Azek’s Installation Recommendations –  Azek has specific instructions to achieve maximum lifespan and presentation of its decking materials.  An example is Azek’s specific fastening instructions to secure the materials properly.
  • Ultimately the Deck is Only as Good as the Installer – Contractors are quick to note that the final quality of a deck is largely determined by the installation procedure.
  • Ask your Service Provider about Picture Framing – Contractors noted that using the picture framing method is a great boon to the finishing of Azek decks well.

 Azek Decks Reviews  by Customers

Customers input from 3rd party sources is included here to see what results real-life owners found when living with Azek Decks over a period of time.

  • Stands the Test of Winter – Customer reviews from down south indicate strong performance with Azek during harsh winters even after 2 years.
  • Power Washer Maintenance Replenishes Deck Coloring – customers have also had good experiences with the deck up to multiple years of ownership, with colour being restored after a brief power wash. This also helps remove the growth of algae and other natural occurring growths in humid climates.
  • Staining and Color Fading Issues –  Some customers found significant staining and fading only after 2 years.

Unfavourable Time Frame of Degradation – Customers have also relayed that decks began degrading from 3 months to 2 years which has led to product inquiries.

  • Residual Water Beads Lowers Lifespan – One reviewer observed that water beads would collect and wouldn’t evaporate unless someone cleaned it. This has lasting implications for durability and reduces the life span of the decking material.
  • Rampant Stains If not Installed Correctly – Unfortunately, one customer had significant issues with foliage causing stains on their Azek deck, requiring regular cleaning. Others didn’t have the same problem when the deck was installed by an experienced provider.
  • Get the Screw and Plug System – It’s always the small details that cause issues. One customer noticed a fade that couldn’t be removed for color-matched screws. The fix is ensuring to use a screw and plug system.

Azek in the News

Expect Jay Fencing to do the nitty gritty research and leg work when working with the team. Here are some highlights of the pending class action lawsuit with Azek and their product challenges. There have been numerous complaints regarding the lifespan and quality of Azek deck materials, leading to a consolidated class action lawsuit that is valued at $5M in settlements. The source link below shows a court document detailing other complaints and specifics on the inquiry.

What you need to know:

Experts say that materials are expected to degrade and fade over time, but ultimately it comes down to whether the deck installer is knowledgeable and experienced. For clients who are set on getting Azek, they need to go with an experienced provider of decking solutions to ensure low upfront costs while attaining top results for a lower total cost of ownership.

Custom Driveway Gate Design Tips

Thinking of designing your own driveway gates? Here are some great ideas and tips for designing your own driveway gates for your property or workplace. Working with a qualified installer can help you choose the right design for property or site.

Know the Bylaws in your Area

Iron Gates #20

Knowing your city’s bylaws and designing your gate to ensure there are no infractions will help you save time and money. It is advised that relevant bylaws are consulted prior to designing the height and swing radius of your gate as industrial, commercial, and residential zones have varying requirements. Above is a great example of a compliant driveway gate. Note that there are usually differing regulations for commercial and residential zones, as well as nuances to enclosing  a property with a pool. For more details on how to build a compliant fence see here.

Choosing the Right Color

Choosing the colour of your gate can be simple but surprisingly difficult. To find the right contrast with or complement to your property, look at the surrounding pillars and the color of your home to help you narrow the list of potential colour choices. Based on best practices, it is recommended that you choose versatile and adaptable colors like black, Gainsboro (light grey), or even an Alice (pale) blue. Ensure that the color you select balances aesthetic appeal and durability. Fences can fade and decolor over time due to weather and wear/tear.

Know what Vehicles will be Using the Gate

Iron Gates #21

Iron Gates #21

Gates are designed not merely to be an exclamation point for a property but primarily to manage who comes in and out of your property. This factor has an impact on how wide your  gate should be.

For those expecting entrants to include commercial vehicles like trucks or if you own nautical vehicles this means you need a wider gate.  If you’re only expecting foot traffic the gate can be designed more narrow, allowing for a significant reduction in your costs.

How it works: Typically fencing posts are entrenched with concrete for added stability, but there are cases where the interiors of the fence will also need to be buried to prevent entrance through digging.

Know Who You’re Trying to Keep out (Style/ Height)

If you are wary of unexpected visitors coming into your property, ensure that you design the right height and style for your gate. Having forked or elevated heads on your gate often serves as an effective deterrent, even on a shorter fence, for those unwanted visitors. Other styles of gates with less security offer a smooth gate top that allows for a differentiated aesthetics and a more welcoming atmosphere.

Automated versus Manual Entry

On a chilly or rainy day, having an automated gate will certainly provide convenience. If a design is intended to utilize automated (sliding or swing) gate options then it needs to take into account additional components such as a gate opener and contact points in which the gate will be automated and controlled. A manual entry gate has fewer additional components, but you’ll need to hone in on the specifics of where the lock/latch should be placed. A gate closer should also be considered when opting for manual entry, to reduce the impact to the lock/latch of the gate while also providing noise reduction on entry and exit. If you aren’t sure which brands to look at when buying a gate opener, start here.

Hire an Experienced Designer and Installer

wall (27 of 28)Hiring an experienced advisor is the fastest way to design, and optimize life span, and ensure the durability of your driveway gate. Having an experienced designer to help you anticipate maintenance and security challenges will help you build a lasting security fence solution. An experienced fence professional can also help you design for maximum life span and optimized security and privacy profiles.

How it works: Call Jay Fencing to schedule an appointment or consultation.  This hassle-free service is quick and convenient to setup. A 10 minute conversation can extend the lifespan of your fence by up to 5 years, even in the extreme Ontario weather conditions.

Top 10 Perimeter Fencing Tips -Buyers Guide to Picking and Managing Contractors

In this article, we feature various troubles and headaches run into by customers of different fencing companies. Find out the top 10 tips on how to choose the best company for perimeter fencing based on customer complaints.  Click here to find out how the team at Jay Fencing can help you get your perimeter fence hassle-free and at the best price.

Perimeter fencing’s essential function is to restrict access and entry to a property, though we use the term more loosely here to include any fencing structures that help with home or organizational security. To get things rolling, here is a helpful video on building straight fences with landscaping challenges.

10 Perimeter Fencing Tips Based on Competitor’s Customer Issues

Lessons learned are invaluable, particularly when others have already paid for the lesson. Below is a curated list of customer complaints that have been filed against different fencing companies and the insights we can extract from them.

#1 - Start By Getting the Fencing Plan and Quote
#1 - Start By Getting the Fencing Plan and Quote
One competitor reviewer relays that: "I was never given a price, a quote sheet, any drawing, any pictures of the type of fence or what the gate would look like. They started building the fence when most of us were at work. They then had to rip it all down as it was not the style we wanted. "

Tip: Buyers should ensure that they receive the fencing design and a price contract before allowing any individual to go forward with work. Sly tactics are sometimes used to lock property owners into a contractor.
#2 - Check for Debris and Garbage after the Job is Done
#2 - Check for Debris and Garbage after the Job is Done
Here is another unpleasant experience from a competitor's reviewer: "Piles of dirt were left in the yard; nails, garbage, and metal joist hangers thrown into the bushes at the back of the yard. Their food garbage put in my empty flower pots, and I was even missing my own rake at the side of my house."

Tip: After the job has been completed, survey your home and also look behind any garden fixtures and plants to ensure the job is completed and tidy. Don't let fencing vendors get away with a sloppy job.
#3 - Check for Proper Functioning of Gate Components
#3 - Check for Proper Functioning of Gate Components
In an unfortunate incident, one competitor's services lead to this issue: "One of my gates is completely unusable as it hits my downspout which is very damaged from them trying to make it work."

Tip: Customers must ensure that the finished product meets their expectations and a great litmus test is if you wouldn't sell the product to someone, chances are you shouldn't be sold it either.
#4 - Don't Give In to Changes in Price Quotes
#4 - Don't Give In to Changes in Price Quotes
After competitor raised the prices on a fencing project from what had been agreed upon, here were the closing comments of the dissatisfied reviewer: "I've spent a substantial portion of my career issuing accurate quotes for large scale custom production jobs. I've never come in above an agreed upon price. Coming in above the quoted price for ANY foreseeable reason is completely unacceptable and is terrible business practice. This is made even worse by trying to raise a price after having started the job. I would urge anyone who is considering using this company again. I'm now on the hunt for a company who has the integrity to do what they say they will do."

Tip: Both parties are responsible for delivering service or payment when entering into agreement terms. Customers should not feel pressured to give in even though they have invested time or energy preparing for the project.
#5 - Look for Workmanship Guarantees
#5 - Look for Workmanship Guarantees
Fences often look sturdy and polished on the first day of completion, but don't fall into this dilemma as another reviewer did: "By far the WORST experience I have ever had with a contractor, the fence is less than a year old and has fallen apart, along with the gate."

Tip: Before choosing a fencing provider ensure they have a minimum workmanship guarantee. Jay Fencing offers 2 year guarantee for any quality or workmanship issues ensuring you get what you need.
#6 - Get the Scoop on the Company's Track Record on Customer Service
#6 - Get the Scoop on the Company's Track Record on Customer Service
Often things don't go according to plan, but having a company that cares about customers can help you navigate those rocky waters. One competitor's customer had this to say: "The gate we paid for looks awful!! Posts were sinking and several places not level and very noticeable. When we called to ask the owner to come out to do a walk around with us to show him the problems he showed no concern at all and refused and proceeded to text us on the Saturday night telling us "it was time to pay up"."

Tip: Ensure the company you're working with has a reputation for customer service. Request previous customer contacts and references to understand the company's track record.
#7 - Work with a Company that Knows City Bylaws (Click on Image for Bylaws)
#7 - Work with a Company that Knows City Bylaws (Click on Image for Bylaws)
Fencing projects must abide by city fencing bylaws, and failing to comply will mean disgruntled neighbours or penalties for infractions. In another unfortunate incident, a reviewer relays their experience with a competitor: "Wasn't long before I discovered that they didn't take any [measurements] and the posts were 2 ft too far on my neighbour's lot and several inches on the city side over too far. I called Dan and he rushed over the next morning and confirmed what I already knew."

Tip: Talk to your company about what they now about your city's fencing bylaws and get up to speed using our bylaws page. If ever in doubt, call Jay Fencing and our specialists can give you tips on inspecting your fence.
#7 - Work with a Company that Knows City Bylaws (Click on Image for Bylaws)
#8 - Check your Fence Invoice and Credit Card Bill
#8 - Check your Fence Invoice and Credit Card Bill
Billing issues can sneak up on you and to ensure that what you pay is commensurate with the service provided, customers should do what they can to avoid what happened to our competitor's customer: "I opened a visa account with Fast Fence in Toronto, I am being billed for a fence that was never picked up and now in collections. I have tried to contact them but ignore all my questions, I ask for proof of pick up, this company is doing fraudulent and is not to be trusted. Now it looks like I have to proceed with a lawyer."

Tip: Sometimes honest mistakes happen, but customers should immediately contact their fencing company to ensure any erroneous billing is resolved.
#9 - Ask About the Materials Used in Your Fence
#9 - Ask About the Materials Used in Your Fence
Based on our survey of reviews for competitors, customers are sometimes surprised when their fences begin to fade or disintegrate over even a short period of time: "Myself and 15 other homes have All-Season Pvc Vinyl tan colour fences installed for 3 years and already fading . They promised 3 times to come and investigate the problem and never show up, they won't return my phone calls or emails. They advertise lifetime warranty and boast about customer service, what a bunch of bull!!".

Tip: Be sure to ask your fencing company how long the materials can be expected to last before signing the agreement. This will give customers a firm grasp of the lifespan of the materials and also provides a way for you and the company to establish an understanding of one another's expectations on the durability of the product.
#10 - Know the Materials Warranty versus Service Warranty Small Print
#10 - Know the Materials Warranty versus Service Warranty Small Print
A defective fence has many contributing factors and the line between what the contractor may be responsible for and defects in the fencing materials can be blurry. A difficult issue was encountered here by a customer of another fencing company: "I was told that [the company] would replace the post for free, but we would have to pay approximately $160 for installation of each post, which is over $1,200, for something I have absolutely no control over. I am afraid that after the seven posts that I found to be defective, I will find more as time progresses. I don't feel that I should have to pay for the labor to install the defective posts, since I did not choose the defective posts."

Tip: Use this incident to discuss with your fencing company how they would handle it and ensure there is clarity to what the service / quality guarantee offered covers.
